Caledonian Boar A3 Print
'Caledonian Boar' A3 digital print reproduction of original screen print by illustrator and printmaker Abbie Lois.
Abbie Lois is an illustrator and printmaker based in Glasgow, whose work is inspired by storytelling and folklore. Her work usually has a specific lore behind the piece - themes surrounding landscapes, ancient creatures or interesting people.
Although sadly extinct in Scotland now, wild boar were once a common sight in Scottish forests, and as a result, you can find numerous place names inspired by them in the Gaelic landscape - look for ‘torc’ or ‘tuirc’ on a map.
Boars often feature in folklore across the Celtic landscape - such as in Ireland the story of Diarmuid & Grainne, in Wales the Twrch Trwyth, and in Scotland the boar is sometimes linked to the Cailleach, a goddess figure known as a creator, weather deity and guardian of the land.
