During the persecution of women during the witch trials, cats were said to be the familiars of witches, and it was known for women to be burnt for their alleged crimes with their cats. The idea of cats having nine lives has origins dating back to Ancient Egypt, and much later, in 1584 the author of the novel ‘Beware of the Cat’ stated that nine was the number of times a witch may take on a feline form.
