Ancient Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals, childbirth, care of children and chastity.

She is often seen running through the woods with her bands of nymphs attending her, with her bow and arrow and sacred deer. One of the most famous stories comes from the Trojan War, where the Greek King’s Agamemnon fleet become stuck with no winds to sail them onwards. It transpires that Agamemnon had angered Artemis by killing her sacred deer, and as a result Artemis demanded a sacrifice. The sacrifice was Iphigenia, the daughter of Agamemnon. The young Iphigenia is tricked to the location of her sacrifice by being told she is to marry the legendary Achilles, but just as she is to be killed, Artemis pities her and replaces her with a deer.
