At the very start of February, it’s said that the Cailleach - the goddess of the Scottish landscape and all which resides there - is faced with two possibilities. The first; it’s a beautiful sunny day, meaning that she can collect firewood to make winter last another month from her mountain abode. The second; the day is rainy and miserable, meaning she cannot gather her firewood, and winter won’t last much longer as she will return to her deep slumber over the spring and summer months.
